Current EPA ambient water quality criteria for developing WQS

EPA develops ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for pollutants and other water quality conditions that render water unsafe for people and wildlife. The AWQC are available to states and tribal governments to use as guidance in developing their own state-based WQS. The Clean Water Act directs states to review newly published AWQC as part of each triennial standards review to determine if adoption into state water quality rules is needed.

MPCA seeks information from the public to help determine if there are adequate, defensible data and a demonstrated need to update current WQS or add new WQS to Minnesota rules using AWQC developed by EPA.
