As of 2013, septic tanks must be registered in Minnesota to ensure they are watertight and have adequate structural integrity. Structural integrity must be verified by calculation, proof testing, or a licensed engineer to determine the horizontal and vertical loads when empty. Manufacturers must submit a statement certifying that the tank meets the strength requirements specified in Minn. R. 7080.1910 and that watertight testing has been completed. The watertight assessment is an annual requirement, and the information must be submitted by December 31. Any design changes to a precast tank model must be re-verified.

Sewage tanks include septic tanks, holding tanks, pump tanks, privy tanks, and other processing tanks. Some non-registered tanks can be used under certain conditions.

The list of registered sewage tanks includes the manufacturer's name, a link to the company's web site, and the registered product's name and model. For each product, the list includes product size and material, how it can be used, burial depth, and more.
