As Sustainability Program Manager at Fairview Health Services, Wesli Waters is responsible for managing the Fairview system green team along with projects related to energy efficiency, water conservation, healthy food systems, environmentally preferable purchasing, and more.
During her Minnesota GreenCorps service year in 2011-2012—also spent at Fairview—Wesli established office supply and furniture reuse stores at Fairview hospitals and office locations. In addition, she worked to reduce incoming junk mail, set up organics recycling in Fairview cafeterias, and find a sustainable alternative to Styrofoam shipping coolers in the retail pharmacy.
She credits her GreenCorps experience for teaching valuable project management skills, such as stakeholder engagement strategies and setting project goals, timelines, and budgets. Wesli also treasures the relationships that she established with staff at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and with fellow MGC members. She continues seek advice from "this great group of environmental leaders.”
“Everyone involved in the MGC program was extremely supportive, and the MPCA leaders provided great tools, resources and knowledge to assist us throughout our service.” If considering Minnesota GreenCorps service, her advice is to “take advantage of the networking opportunities and sustainability tools provided by the MPCA. The mentors are great resources and are full of information and knowledge related to your field of interest.”
