2017: Member - Kaitlin Steinberg

2017 MInnesota GreenCorps member Kaitlin SteinbergAbout me. I grew up in Scandia, Minn., and then attended Bethel University in Saint Paul where I studied Business, Political Science and Spanish. It was a study abroad trip to Ecuador, a country filled with people dedicated to protecting their many natural resources, where my initial interest in environment protection and sustainability was first sparked. After graduation, I worked in project management for almost 3 years before deciding to switch gears and purse a career in the environmental field. In my free time, I enjoy reading, hiking, trying new foods and exploring new places.

About my service. I am serving as a Waste Prevention and Recycling member for the city of Saint Paul's Public Works Department. Throughout the year, I will be focusing on the city’s multi-unit recycling program by expanding recycling service, providing education and assistance to apartment residents and property managers, and developing a waste-reduction pilot project. Additionally, I will be supporting municipal recycling efforts such as implementing recycling updates in city buildings, and expanding the city’s internal organics recycling program. I will also be providing recycling education, outreach and services to Saint Paul residents.

Why I serve. I want to pursue a career where service, community involvement, and environmental protection blend, and where I can serve a purpose larger than myself. Being in MN GreenCorps allows me to achieve those goals, while also receiving an incredible amount of networking and education. I also serve to show others, and to show myself, that you don’t need to have an environmental background to pursue a passion for this field. Anyone, regardless of their background or experiences, can take action toward environmental protection and getting involved in their communities. I hope to be a positive example of this while tackling recycling and sustainability projects during my service year.

My favorite place to visit in Minnesota. Living in Minneapolis, I really enjoy the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, especially strolling around Lake Calhoun in the summertime. Being from Scandia, however, I also have a soft spot for the St. Croix River Valley area. I grew up canoeing the St. Croix River and driving down the scenic byway where there are gorgeous fall leaves, cliffs, and river views.
