St. Paul, Minn. — Minnesota GreenCorps is accepting member applications in preparation for another year of helping to preserve and protect Minnesota’s environment.
Minnesota GreenCorps, an environmentally focused AmeriCorps program coordinated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), places members with organizations around the state to spend 11 months of service, beginning in September 2015, addressing critical environmental issues while gaining experience and learning valuable job skills.
Goals of the Minnesota GreenCorps program include:
- reducing solid waste and increasing recycling in Minnesota communities;
- reducing greenhouse gases and other air pollutants;
- reducing water runoff and improving water quality; and,
- training new environmental professionals.
Minnesota GreenCorps is a unique opportunity for individuals to gain experience in the environmental field, whether they are just out of college or contemplating a career change.
This year’s 40 GreenCorps projects have been making their mark on communities throughout the state. Independent School District 191’s GreenCorps member helped reduce the district’s energy use during the 2013-2014 service year, saving an impressive $55,000 during the course of one year.
Aubrey Fonfara, a current member serving as a Living Green member at the city of Minneapolis, said of her decision to serve, “GreenCorps is a testament to the idea that by being involved in our community, and inspiring others to value ideas like recycling and green living, and can ultimately create collective and effective change. My service is giving me the opportunity to focus my interests on social sustainability and work directly in community outreach and education to share my passion for environmental preservation.”
Another member, Allison Granos, hosted by Three Rivers Park District looked to GreenCorps as a way to grow professionally. “The GreenCorps program’s emphasis on professional development will prepare me for a future environmental career, and hopefully by the end of my service I will be able to determine what career that will be.”
Completed member applications must be submitted by June 12, 2015 at 5:00 p.m.
