Statewide organics recycling for multifamily buildings

The MPCA has approximately $563,350 available to support projects that either expand organics recycling access to residents or buildings without current access or increase participation at buildings with existing organics recycling programs.

This grant program aims to reduce the amount of organic material being disposed of through landfilling or incineration while providing more opportunities for residents of multifamily buildings to participate in organics recycling programming.

Eligibility

Eligible projects include activities to either expand access to residents or buildings without current access to organics recycling, or to increase participation at buildings with existing organics recycling programs. Some examples include:

  • creating a new organics recycling program at multifamily buildings
  • creating new organics drop-off locations
  • piloting new methods for increasing participation by residents
  • creating a residential recycling ambassador programs
  • testing new collection and education methods

  • 501(c)(3) Not-for-profit and non-profit organizations located in Minnesota or serving Minnesota
  • political subdivisions of the state (including counties, cities, towns, etc.)
  • an owner of a multifamily building(s) in Minnesota
  • a for-profit business that owns a multifamily building(s) in Minnesota
  • Applicants located in, serving, or who are members of Tribal communities are eligible and encouraged to apply. However, Tribal governments are not eligible applicants.

Multi-organizational collaboration is allowed.

Available funds

Total available funds: $563,350. Applicants must match at least 20% of the grant request.

Large projects: $263,000 is available

  • maximum award: $200,000
  • minimum award: $100,000

Medium projects: $150,000 is available

  • maximum award: $99,999
  • minimum award: $30,000

Small projects: $150,000 is available

  • maximum award: $29,999
  • minimum award: $15,000

How to apply

The request for proposal (RFP) and application materials can only be viewed through the online SWIFT portal. The RFP is termed an “Event” within the SWIFT system.

  1. Go to the online SWIFT portal.
  2. Click on "Bidding opportunities".
  3. Find the event by name (MPCA-Statewide Organics Recycling/Multi Family) or ID (2000017348).
  4. Click "View Bid Package" to see the RFP and forms. (There’s no need to log in to see the documents.)

Grant applications are only accepted through the SWIFT portal.

  1. Register as a bidder in the SWIFT Supplier Portal, (Bidding = "applying")
  2. Choose "Register for an Account" and then "Register as a Bidder".
