The MPCA will host a public informational meeting to discuss the draft wastewater permits and variance request for the U.S. Steel Keetac facility’s mine and tailings basin.
This meeting will offer the opportunity to learn more about the draft permits for the mine and the tailings basin, the MPCA's preliminary determination to deny U.S. Steel's sulfate variance request, and how to submit a public comment on the draft permits.
Please note that the MPCA is not taking oral public comments at this meeting. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit written comments on the draft permits and on the variance request via paper forms at the meeting.
The draft industrial wastewater permits and variance request are available for public comment through Sept. 8, 2025.

The draft wastewater permits and the preliminary decision to deny the sulfate variance request for the U.S. Steel Keetac facility's mine and tailings basin are now available for public comment.
Meeting agenda:
- 5:30-6 p.m. - Open house. Attendees are invited to visit informational tables and ask questions of staff.
- 6-6:45 p.m. - Presentation from MPCA staff.
- 6:45-7:30 p.m. - Question and answer session with MPCA staff. Audience members will be invited to ask questions about the permits and the variance request. The question and answer session is not a public comment period of record.
