Smart Salting: Rural roads certification training (private)

Participants will learn how to integrate science with practical winter maintenance while minimizing impacts on the environment. Training will also briefly touch on other sources of chloride such as dust suppressants for gravel roads and water softening.

  • audience: public and private winter maintenance staff and winter maintenance contractors that maintain rural roads that generally do not have a bare pavement policy, and staff from communities getting a chloride limit in their wastewater permit
  • upon completion of training and passing the test issued at the end of training, you will earn a Smart Salting certification that expires five years from the date of training

Registration information

This is a private training hosted locally by St. Louis County and the MPCA chloride reduction program. Funding for training development is provided by MPCA through the Clean Water Fund.

Global: Host a Smart Salting event

Host a training or workshop. The Smart Salting training program is rooted in partnerships with local organizations to host trainings. Host responsibilities include advertising the training, providing a venue if hosting an in-person training, and covering a portion of the cost of the training.
