In 2018, MPCA solicited applications for grants to install Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in public places, workplaces, and multi-unit housing.
The intent of this grant is to increase use of electric vehicles in place of gas-powered cars to mitigate nitrogen oxides, and decrease fine particle pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the state. Installing EV charging stations for public use makes EV ownership practical for more Minnesotans.
Awarded grants
(25) Level 2 EV charging stations will be installed in the following locations. All 25 stations are dual port, meaning two vehicles can charge at the same time. Most stations are available for public use 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

(*) Not open to the public: stations are on private property for private use only
Background
Level 2 charging stations, powered by 240 volts of alternating current, provide (SAE) J-1772 standard protocol connectors for drivers to charge their electric vehicles. The intent of the program is to provide charging services to EV drivers likely to park at the station for 15 minutes or longer.
Examples of public place locations include local government (municipality, township, county) facilities, K-12 schools, higher education institution parking facilities, and grocery and retail stores, where the charging stations are available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Workplace charging applications may be for employee or fleet use. Multi-unit dwelling installation sites include apartment and condominium parking facilities.
