Program objectives and technical assistance
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Programs are locations specifically set up to collect, manage and properly dispose of household generated hazardous wastes. Some Programs are also licensed to accept business hazardous waste (Very Small Quantity generators only). Staff at HHW Programs are trained to ensure compliance with environmental and worker protection laws and regulations.
The objectives of HHW Programs are to provide:
- Protection of the environment by eliminating the potential for the release of toxic chemicals
- Improved health and safety thru education on how to purchase, use and store household chemical products
- Protection of the public from adverse impacts of improperly discarded household chemicals
- Proper management and disposal of unwanted hazardous wastes
- A free, re-use alternative for useable products
- Evaluation of incoming materials to categorize and package wastes for proper disposal
The staff in MPCA’s HHW Program provides technical and administrative assistance, including:
- Program design and development
- Facility operation
- Administration of contracts ensuring proper HHW management
- Safety and education training specific for HHW staff
- Licensure for programs choosing to accept business waste
- HHW marketing pilot project
