Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs

TMDL Project: Pomme de Terre River — Fecal Coliform

Background

This project addresses one impaired reach in the lower portion of the Pomme de Terre River, from Muddy Creek to Marsh Lake.  This reach was listed in 1994 for excess concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria.  The project was scheduled to begin in 2006 and to be completed in 2010.  A draft TMDL report has been completed and submitted to the federal U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for final approval. The EPA approved the TMDL on December 7, 2007.  An implementation plan was developed utilizing a consultant.  This plan was submitted to the MPCA and received final approval on September 29, 2008.  The Pomme de Terre River Joint Powers Board is the local sponsor for this project.  The local sponsors are now applying for funding to complete restoration activities.

Map and location

The Pomme de Terre River is located in southwestern Minnesota.  The river originates in southern Otter Tail County and flows south to discharge into Marsh Lake in Swift County. The Pomme de Terre watershed is located in parts of Otter Tail, Grant, Douglas, Stevens, Big Stone, and Swift counties. See the Pomme de Terre River Watershed map below for the specific location of the reach within this watershed.
