Duluth, Minn. — On March 11, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will host a public information meeting and take comments on a draft air permit for the United Taconite LLC – Fairlane plant to upgrade its air emissions control equipment and track mercury emissions.

The meeting will be held at the Clinton Community Center, 8907 Minnesota Highway 37 in Iron Junction, Minn. An open house is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. followed by a presentation on the draft permit and time for questions and comments. In case of inclement weather, the meeting will be held on March 12 in the same location. If the meeting has been rescheduled, notice will be posted on the MPCA’s homepage, www.pca.state.mn.us, under “News.”

The Forbes, Minn. facility processes the iron ore in taconite for shipment to manufacturing plants where it is made into a variety of steel products.

The draft air permit would authorize the facility to replace particulate (dust) emission control equipment and incorporate a plan to track and calculate mercury emissions. This permit action would reduce particulate emissions and ensure no increase in mercury emissions. It does not authorize any emissions increases.

Public comments will be accepted for 30 days between Feb. 23 and March 25, 2015. Written comments made during the comment period will be responded to by MPCA permit staff. Forms will be available at the meeting for the public to submit written comments on the draft permit.

Copies of the draft permit will be available on the agency’s Public Notices webpage, or can be mailed upon receipt of a written request. Additional materials will be available by appointment during normal work hours at the MPCA’s offices in St. Paul, 520 Lafayette Road North, 651-757-3263, and Duluth, 525 Lake Avenue South, 218-723-4660. All agency offices and staff are available toll free at 1-800-657-3864.
