MPCA seeks comments on environmental review for Rochester generating station

Rochester, Minn. — Rochester Public Utilities is proposing construction of a new generating station in Olmsted County. The project includes installation of five new natural gas-fired engines. Power from the new generator will be used to serve utility customers in the area, and will back up intermittent resources such as wind and solar power during periods of peak demand.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has prepared an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) on the proposal. The EAW is intended to identify potential environmental effects from projects such as this one, and to help determine whether a more in-depth environmental review is needed.

The public may submit written comments, either by mail or email to Charles Peterson, 520 Lafayette Road North, St. Paul, MN 55155-4194.

Deadline for comments: 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 3, 2016.

The EAW covers site location details, and assesses the potential for a variety of environmental impacts of the project, such as air pollution, noise, stormwater runoff, and impact on wildlife.

The worksheet for this project is available on the MPCA's EAW webpage.
