The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has extended the public comment period for the draft state permit for the SKB Lansing Landfill, north of Austin in Mower County, to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 11, in order to give interested parties more time to review the draft permit and provide comment.
The ownership of the SKB Lansing Landfill and the adjacent WCI Austin Landfill merged into one entity in August 2017. This draft permit would cover activities at both the SKB Lansing Landfill and WCI Austin Landfill sites, which operate as a Class 3 and Class 2 demolition landfill, respectively. The sites together encompass 116.1 acres in Section 21 of Lansing Township.
The SKB Lansing Landfill would continue to operate as a Class 3 demolition landfill, accepting all types of construction and demolition waste as well as most industrial waste. A Class 3 facility must have groundwater monitoring, waste screening, a liner underneath the waste, and a system to collect leachate (water such as precipitation that mixes with the waste).
The WCI Austin Landfill is a demolition landfill that was formerly operated as Vonco 4 and was owned by Veit Companies. WCI Austin Landfill purchased this site in July 2014. Under the draft state permit, it would continue to operate as a Class 2 demolition landfill, accepting construction and demolition waste, along with non-recyclable packaging such as paper, cardboard and plastic, as well as industrial wastes such as wood, concrete, porcelain fixtures, shingles and window glass.
The public notice and draft permit for SKB Lansing Landfill are on the MPCA's Public Notices webpage. Scroll down to December 6 on this page to find the associated materials.
