Duluth, Minn. — On July 21, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) staff will provide information and take comments about Magnetation LLC’s draft air emissions operating permit for its Plant 2. This permit is needed to meet federal and state air quality requirements.
The public informational meeting will be held at the Community Center, 26 Haynes Street in Taconite, Minn. An open house is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. followed by the draft permit presentation and time for questions and comments.
Magnetation conducts scram mining operations at existing tailings basins and operates a processing facility in Bovey, Minn. Scram mining produces usable iron ore from previously developed stockpiles or tailings basins. Tailings are leftover material from previous mining operations. The facility processes the iron ore in the tailings and ships the product to manufacturing plants where it is made into a variety of steel products.
Public comments will be accepted for 30 days between July 3 and August 3, 2015. Comments made at the meeting and prior to the start of the comment period will be included in the draft permit’s administrative record. Written comments made during the comment period will be responded to by MPCA permit staff.
Copies of the draft permit will be available on the agency’s Public Notice webpage, by phone to Hassan Bouchareb, 651-757-2653, or by emailing email@example.com. Additional materials related to the facility will be available by appointment during normal work hours at the MPCA’s offices in St. Paul, 520 Lafayette Road North, 651-296-6300, and Duluth, 525 Lake Avenue South, 218-723-4660. All agency offices and staff are available toll free at 1-800-657-3864.
