Legacy Building Solutions, a 75-employee company near St. Cloud that makes and sells fabric buildings, called the MPCA small business helpline about possible environmental requirements for a planned painting and abrasive blasting expansion to their facility. MPCA staff asked a few questions about planned products and equipment, pollutant capture and control devices, and current equipment use. The responses indicated that Legacy could qualify for a simplified air registration permit. Registration permits cover businesses with low air-pollutant emissions and offer flexibility to growing business.
Because Legacy Building called during the planning stages, MPCA staffer Emily Ohde could help them complete and submit their permit application, which requires the company to calculate its potential air emissions. Emily also helped the company set up personalized tools for monitoring and record-keeping, to help them comply with the permit requirements. One tool is an emissions calculator, customized to the company's operations, to help with annual reporting.
"[I was] very thankful for the direct help with the permit application and keeping me apprised about the permit process," says Ellie Fox, Chief Operations Officer for Legacy Building Solutions, who worked directly with Emily. Ellie says Emily helped their permit process go "quickly and smoothly," and was integral to keeping their construction project on schedule. "[Emily is] an asset to the MPCA small business program!" she added.
All Minnesota-based businesses must identify which regulations apply to them and, if necessary, obtain air permits prior to construction.
