By Lisa Joan Miller, 10-year Citizen Lake Monitor
I have been a Citizen Lake Monitoring Program volunteer for many years.
Two years ago, I bought myself a rowboat so I could get some exercise and enjoy the peace and quiet. Now I row around the edge of the lake on beautiful days after I have done my monitoring.
I noticed lots of cans in the water near the shore, so I started bringing along my camera, a net, a bucket, and a can opener. Why a can opener you ask?
Well, as I was emptying the water out of a can, something started to flutter in the bottom and scared the bejesus out of me! I filled the can back up, took it home and used a can opener to free a little bullhead.
I pick up an average of 10 cans every time I am out and about 75% have bullheads trapped inside.
It makes me so sad to think these little fish swam in there, grew, and became too large to ever leave.
Now I am on my own personal “Free the Bullheads” campaign!! I am making the world a better place by picking up cans and making the difference in the life of a bullhead!
