In 2019, MPCA offered $1.5 million in grants to exclusively fund new, all-electric replacements for heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment in Minnesota. The heavy-duty electric grant provided key financial assistance to businesses and organizations that want to invest in new all-electric technology.
In total, six projects were awarded funding. The heavy-duty electric grants will help businesses purchase one new all-electric step van model used for making deliveries, one all-electric tow tractor used for towing aircraft, and three all-electric class 8 semi tractors. In addition, one Minnesota school district will replace an older diesel school bus with an all-electric Blue Bird Type C school bus.
Initially, $630,000 of the funds were set aside for six electric school buses. Since only one electric school bus was awarded during this round, the remaining funds will be carried over to future electric school bus grant opportunities.
Over the lifetime of the vehicles, projects funded by this grant are expected to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (2.77 tons), fine particle pollution (0.02 tons), and greenhouse gases (441.29 tons).
