Past bulletins

MPCA grants are now open for projects that will reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) at a variety of Minnesota-based organizations. Potential projects include switching to water-based or low-VOC solvents, inks, coatings or cleaners, or buying alternative process equipment or vehicles.

MPCA is providing a "redline copy" showing proposed changes to the  Air Quality Dispersion Modeling Practices Manual for 2017-2018. Comments received by July 15 will be taken into consideration before the final version of this year’s manual is posted.

This summer the MPCA will be forecasting air quality conditions statewide. As a result, people who may be sensitive to elevated levels of air pollution – including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory problems – can be better prepared to protect their health when conditions are trending toward poor air quality.

MPCA launched a new electronic service that allows air dispersion modeling protocols to now be submitted online, streamlining processes and decreasing data entry. Facilities are not required to use the online service, but MPCA encourages making the transition no later than November 21, 2016.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today a new, lower ground-level ozone standard of 70 parts per billion (ppb). Based on preliminary 2015 monitoring data, all monitors in Minnesota are able to meet the standard. Learn more about the new standard and ozone levels in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will begin the annual revision of its modeling guidance and forms this spring. Agency staff is collecting your comments through the end of March. Offer your thoughts and experiences on the existing guidance and forms, as well as any suggestions you have to update or improve existing modeling practices and program features.

The MPCA will publish a revised public notice for the Draft/Proposed Part 70 General Permit for Low-Emitting Facilities on December 23, 2014. The general permit is targeted toward facilities which have low actual emissions, high potential emissions, and which have constructed and operated prior to getting an air emissions permit.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency plans to publish the Notice of Adoption of the Mercury Air Emissions Reduction and Reporting Rules in the State Register on September 22, 2014.

During the 2013 legislative session, the Minnesota Legislature directed the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to amend the definition of two terms used in state air pollution control rules. The public is invited to comment on the proposed amended definition of “potential emissions” and “potential to emit” through July 31, 2014. As authorized by the 2013 legislation, the MPCA is using an abbreviated rulemaking process to adopt this amendment.

On Thursday, May 22, a webinar sponsored by Center for the Energy and the Environment will allow interested parties to hear how Minnesota might draft a plan, and our interest in considering regional approaches to CO2 reductions.
