Red River of the North Basin Potential Groundwater Contamination Sources in the Basin Waste disposal sites are considered to be major potential sources of ground water contamination in the Red River Basin. Contamination from materials such as hazardous waste and leachate from landfills pose a potential threat to the Basin's valuable ground water resources. A map showing the locations of various sites contaminated with hazardous waste that are currently included in government cleanup programs, and sites of solid waste landfills are available on the following page.
There are several environmental cleanup programs and categories. CERCLIS (Comprehensive Environmental Responsibility, Cleanup, and Liability Information System) sites are potential or actual cleanup sites identified by the federal government. NPL (National Priorities List) sites are actual cleanup sites identified by the federal government, and are thus a subset of the CERCLIS list. PLP (Permanent List of Priorities) sites are actual cleanup sites identified by the State of Minnesota. These sites may or may not be on the CERCLIS of NPL lists, and in fact, many are not identified by the federal government as cleanup sites. Related Information
