Product Stewardship Speaker Series
This speaker series showcases business and government efforts to promote product stewardship for products and materials. Themes include design for the environment, end-of-life management, and the development of programs for product standards and certification. Featuring the perspectives of prominent companies, government leaders, academics and environmental advocates, each event will allow significant opportunity for discussion.

Biomaterials, plastics and polymers made from plant-based chemicals are a growing industry, with a budding concentration of pioneers here in Minnesota. Come learn about research being conducted and products being developed using bio-based chemicals. Hear perspectives on economic and environmental advantages with respect to those producing biopolymers and challenges to overcome in commercializing them.
Presentations from a four-member panel will be followed by a short question-and-answer session. Panelists: Marc Hillmyer, Center for Sustainable Polymers (U of MN); Cora Leibig, Segetis; Dale Wahlstrom, BioBusiness Alliance of Minnesota; and Shri Ramaswamy, Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (U of MN).

February 2008: Professor Timothy M. Smith, University of Minnesota's Corporate Environmental Management Program
A presentation on the growing interest in product standards, certifications and eco-labels and their role in promoting sustainable products. Dr. Smith's current research and consulting efforts focus on organizational adoption of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other environmental performance enhancing technologies, as well as the effectiveness of marketing communications around "green" messaging and life cycle assessment (LCA) information.
