The committee heard a presentation on the concepts behind "zero waste," and finished the presentation on collection strategies from the last meeting.

The afternoon session included a discussion of current solid waste policy in Minnesota, and the direction the group should go in order to develop recommendations to present to the Legislature.

The committee's second meeting included presentations on the Citizens Jury on Metro Solid Waste (June 2001) and an overview of solid waste financing in Minnesota.

The afternoon session concluded with a discussion of desired "Environmental and Societal Values." Each member was asked to envision their ideal Minnesota solid waste management system and brainstorm a list of the environmental and societal values/concepts that are necessary of such a system. Members were then asked to rank their top four or five values/concepts and place them on Post-it notes. These ideas will be discussed at the November 8 meeting.

This was the first meeting of the Advisory Committee. The group heard greetings from Sherry Enzler, Director of the Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance, and Representative Dennis Ozment. After a brief discussion about policy outcomes and the 2002 Legislative Session, the members of the committee introduced themselves.

The session included a review Minnesota's solid waste management system and important dates, as well as a discussion of the recommendations that came out of the Solid Waste Technical Advisory Work Group.
