The “Build It Recycled” Trailer

The “Build It Recycled” trailer (BIRT) was developed to make the public aware of interior and exterior products that are manufactured out of recycled materials, or are notably energy-efficient or friendly to the environment. Carefully chosen building products and interior decoration materials are displayed to feature their intended use in the 10' x 30' “Build-It-Recycled” trailer.

Build it Recycled

A partnership of northeastern Minnesota organizations formally introduced BIRT on May 13, 1997. This “recycled house display on wheels” made its first appearance at Lake Superior College in Duluth, where it was built by students and faculty.

“This unique building project allowed students and faculty at Lake Superior College to work with materials that are new to construction,” said John Calcaterra, a building construction instructor. “When these students graduate and enter the construction trade, they will look for recycled content building materials.”

“The communities in northeast Minnesota recycled over 50,000 tons of material in 1996. This project allows us to share with the surrounding communities the many useful products made from recycled materials.” – Kurt Soderberg, WLSSD Executive Director.

The development and construction of the recycled house display was funded through a grant from the OEA with additional support from the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) and Carlton, Lake and St. Louis Counties. The trailer has toured northeastern Minnesota, and will expand its educational audience from students and instructors to community residents, home and business owners.
