FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 11/02/2009
Contact: Dan Olson, 218-846-8108

Detroit Lakes, Minn. -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued an updated permit for an expansion of the Clay County Sanitary Landfill near Hawley. The new permit was issued Oct. 19 and is effective for five years.

The permitting process included public meetings, a hearing before the MPCA Citizen's Board, and a 30-day public comment period. The new permit raises the permitted capacity at the site from 3,381,500 cubic feet to 3,569,000 cubic feet. Plans call for ultimately increasing the capacity at the site to 5,438,963 cubic feet in future years. The new permit covers a vertical expansion at the site as well as a gas-collection system and additional stormwater-management measures.
