Hibbing Public Utilities Commission Penalized for Alleged Environmental Permit Violations
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and the Hibbing, Minn., Public Utilities Commission recently reached an agreement resolving the utility's alleged failure to follow state air quality permit requirements. As a result, the HPUC will pay a $33,000 penalty and fulfill all compliance requirements, including a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) to reduce noise valued at more than $19,000.

Revised Report on Pollution in Lake Shaokatan Open for Public Comment
A second public comment period begins Feb. 8 and continues through March 10, 2010 on a revised report addressing water pollution in Lake Shaokatan in western Lincoln County. The report, known as a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study, focuses on pollution caused by high levels of phosphorus, contributing to excessive algae growth.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued an air pollution health alert for the southern half of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, Rochester and Marshall, for Thursday, February 4, through Friday, February 5. The MPCA has issued an air pollution health advisory for the same period for central Minnesota, which includes Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth and St. Cloud.

MPCA Seeks Comments on Water Quality Standard Proposed for South Metro Mississippi River
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency today announced a public comment period will begin Feb. 8 and continue through March 26 on a water quality standard proposed for the south metro Mississippi River. The public is encouraged to attend meetings on the standard on Feb. 11, from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the University of Minnesota Southern Research and Outreach Center in Waseca, and on Feb. 23, from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing.

State Dollars for Water Quality Projects Approved
The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), in cooperation with an interagency team that also includes the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, approved more than $14 million in state grants for projects that will protect and restore Minnesota's streams, rivers, lakes and groundwater.

Willmar, Minn. -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Fibrominn of Benson reached an agreement recently resolving the company's past failure to comply with state air-quality rules and permit conditions. Air emission violations occurring since 2007 resulted in a $65,000 penalty, and corrective actions including the installation of a new sulfur dioxide monitor at a minimum cost of $80,000.
