Minnesota Sustainable Communities Network

Increasing numbers of Minnesotans recognize that a transition to a more sustainable society is needed if we are to leave a healthy natural environment, a prosperous economy and vibrant communities for future generations. Many individuals and organizations throughout the state are working toward sustainability in areas as diverse as agriculture, waste management, energy, manufacturing, retail, urban planning, economic development, legislative policy, housing, forestry, education, land use and transportation.

The Minnesota Sustainable Communities Network supports this mission.

Goals

The goal of MnSCN is to encourage networking, information exchange, and better access to assistance.

This 12-page article presents MnSCN as a model for sustainability outreach and education.

This network consists of individuals, non-profit organizations, businesses, local governments, educational institutions, and other organizations in Minnesota (and bordering areas) who are interested in moving toward sustainability — meeting our needs today while ensuring that future generations can continue to meet their own needs.

There is no charge for membership, and no further obligation for joining. MnSCN is open to all with an interest in sustainability.

Members will be added to the MnSCN mailing list and receive practical information on sustainability through e-mail updates, the NextStep Web site printed resources, gatherings, grant programs, and training and networking opportunities. Some specific advantages for joining include:

  • Useful Information. Network members will receive information about sustainability in a bi-weekly e-mail newsletter and occaisional mailings. Check out the NextStep Web site, the MnSCN's online home for sustainability. Information on local success stories, guides, manuals, videos, activities in other organizations, and other materials are available.
  • Opportunities for Networking. MnSCN members will have the opportunity to meet others at conferences and workshops with similar interests in sustainability, which can lead to broader local partnerships and new working relationships. An online directory of MnSCN members is provided and special gatherings will be planned for the MnSCN.
  • Access to Assistance. Network members are encouraged to contact staff from the Sustainable Communities team for technical assistance that can help you and your community move towards sustainability. We can also help to connect members with other state and local assistance providers.
  • Leads on Financial Assistance. Information will be disseminated on financial assistance opportunities.
  • Referrals. Network members can be put into contact with other networks organized around issues such as sustainable agriculture, resource-efficient building, transportation, and land use.

And, equally important, you will receive the satisfaction that you are taking a step to create a better future for yourself, your community, and the generations that will follow.
