NextStep is an interactive Web site specifically designed for people interested in sustainability. The site provides the ability to post and search for information related to sustainability, including resources, job listings, calendar events, case studies, ongoing discussions and more!

The Sustainable Communities team promotes sustainable development activities at the community level. Our help involves inspiration, education, consultation, program design, training, meeting planning, environmental technical assistance, financial assistance, conferences and workshops, and referrals.

Criteria for evaluating sustainability

This list of criteria offer a range of interrelated issues that communities should consider in choosing more sustainable courses of action.

Conferences and events

The MPCA, in partnership with others, has organized conferences and hosted educational and training events promoting sustainable development.

Minnesota Sustainable Communities Network (MnSCN)

MnSCN is made up of individuals, nonprofit organizations, businesses, local governments, educational institutions, and other organizations in Minnesota (and bordering areas) who are interested in moving toward sustainability.

Financial assistance

Our financial assistance priorities include funding for sustainable communities projects that advance community-based activities and practices in resource conservation and pollution prevention.

Community assistance

Sustainable Communities Program staff provide technical assistance to communities throughout the state.

Policy initiatives

The Sustainable Communities Team has worked on a number of policy initiatives at the state and local levels.

  • The Governor's Sustainable Development Roundtable.
  • The Advisory Committee on Community-Based Planning.
  • Federal initiatives such as the President's Council on Sustainable Development.
