Financial assistance

The MPCA's Environmental Assistance Grants include funding for sustainable communities projects.

Although priorities change with each grant round, in general the agency may provide funding for sustainable communities projects that advance community-based activities and practices in resource conservation and pollution prevention. In recent years, more than 30 sustainable communities projects have been funded as Environmental Assistance grants, including:

  • Pilot projects in Renville, St. Joseph, Cold Spring and St. Paul.
  • Sustainable education efforts in Duluth, Minneapolis, St. Paul and Red Wing.
  • Sustainable agriculture activities in the Lower Chippewa River Basin and Washington County.
  • Integrated planning efforts in Stearns and Lincoln Counties.
  • Building and community design projects related to deconstruction, industrial re-development, residential development and construction, and a sustainable building design rating system.
  • Other projects, including neighborhood indicators development in Minneapolis, a feasibility study for a wind energy farm in White Earth, and efforts to research, collect and disseminate information on carbohydrate-based industrial materials.
