Design for Environment Archive
The concepts central to design for the environment have long been a part of Minnesota's efforts to reduce waste and pollution. Many early resources have been replaced in favor of new ones. To accomodate those who may have linked to them, we have posted several older documents here for reference purposes. Please note that these resources have not been updated and may contain out-of-date references such as phone numbers and web links.

Design for Environment Toolkit (1.1Mb)
This was a 72-page resource for product designers and engineers to incorporate environmental attributes into existing product design practices. The toolkit helped designers develop a numerical score for a product to show where that product is strong and where it needs improvement with regards to environmental concerns.

Tools for Design Teams (2001)
This is an overview of methods or tools that can inspire companies to develop innovative environmental attributes in products. What is important is that there is a system in place that motivates product design teams to consider environmental impacts of products and draws upon their aggregate creativity and ingenuity.
Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
An EMS provides a framework for organizations or businesses that are interested in continually improving environmental performance.
High performance ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
The ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems EMS can be optimized by emphasizing resource efficiency and cleaner production. This guide sheet includes examples of high performance systems from a variety of ISO 14001-certified organizations.
