Minnesota Clean Diesel Recovery Act grant
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Clean Diesel Campaign, authorized in the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, to fund the Minnesota Clean Diesel Grant Program. These funds were made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
There were 125 applicants that resulted in 69 grant awards. Grants have been approved and awards are currently being processed. Check the list that follows. It is updated quarterly.

Aggregate Industries was awarded a grant in the construction category to retrofit 27 cement trucks with emission control devices that can reduce fine particle emissions by up to 25%.
Recovery Act Clean Diesel grant distribution
Diesel emissions are a major source of harmful air pollution. After market technology systems and new engines offer significant reductions in pollutants such as fine particles and nitrogen oxides. The MPCA approved more than 1.5 million dollars of clean diesel grant projects, funded from the Recovery Act in August, 2009. Recovery Act funding will not only help improve air quality, but will also help maintain or increase jobs.
There were 125 applicants that resulted in 69 grants awarded. The selected grants include large, small, public and private entities from across the state. The engine categories included on-road medium and heavy duty trucks, non-road construction equipment, refrigerated trailers and marine engines.
The emission reduction project categories include:
- Emission control devices (diesel oxidation catalysts, particulate traps etc.) - 100% funded.
- Main engine replacements - 75% funded
- Idle reduction devices called - auxiliary power units (APUs) - 50% funded.
- New generator engine units for refrigerated trailers (TRUs) - 75% funded.
By far the most popular category was the idle reduction device, resulting in approximately 150 APUs that were approved for funding.
The list below is color coded to show what stage the grant award winners are in the grant process. This list will be updated quarterly.
