Soil Gas Vapor Testing, Remediation at Long Prairie Superfund Site to be Discussed at Jan. 11 Meeting

Contact: Stephen Mikkelson, 218-757-3887

Brainerd, Minn. - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will hold a public information meeting regarding the Superfund site on Central Avenue in Long Prairie at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Long Prairie City Hall, 615 Lake St. S., Long Prairie. Representatives from the MPCA and the consulting firm Terracon will discuss soil gas vapor testing that Terracon conducted in 2009 in the area of 243 Central Ave. in Long Prairie. The testing found that several buildings in the area had exceeded some MPCA guidelines for indoor air. The MPCA has reviewed remediation alternatives because of the high readings of dry cleaning solvent in the soil.

The agency intends to install a soil vapor extraction (SVE) system, also known as "soil venting" or "vacuum extraction," that will reduce contaminants in the soil. The meeting will include results of the sampling, an overview of alternatives that were considered, explanation of why the SVE system was the chosen alterative, and drawings of what the system would look like and where it would be installed. For more information on the meeting, test results or remediation alternatives, call Nile Fellows at 651-757-2352 or Barb Gnabasik at 218-302-6602.
