Sewage Tanks — Product Registration

Sewage tanks include the following types of tanks: Septic tanks, Trash tanks, Holding tanks, Pump tanks, Surge storage tanks, Recirculation tanks and other processing tanks. The "List of Registered SSTS Sewage Tanks," and other related information, is provided on this web page.

Tank registration

In March 2011, the MPCA completed minor changes to the sewage tank design requirements contained in Chapter 7080. These changes affect sewage tank manufacturers. For this reason, as part of the rule amendments, MPCA extended the final tank implementation date for all tank manufacturers to April 4, 2012. Another extension, to November 15, 2012, has been offered to those manufacturers who are in the process of getting their tanks registered. The list of "in-process" manufacturers is included in the At-A-Glance listing below.

Until December 31, 2012, tank manufacturers will be allowed to continue to sell sewage tanks that meet the newly amended design standards or the design standards contained in the 2005 or 2008 rules. Tanks from manufacturers who are fully registered or are in the process of becoming registered by April 4, 2012, (as shown by their inclusion on the "in process" list) can be used through calendar year 2012.

Date

Sewage Tank  Standards to Meet

Notes

Up to April 3, 2012

2005, 2008 or 2011 rules

This was the time to complete the transition to the new sewage tank standards (a four-year transition).

April 4, 2012 and after

2011 rules

Sewage tanks installed in Minnesota must meet the 2011 rules at this time; tanks must either be fully registered or on the "in process" list. See below — the "At-A-Glance Listing of Sewage Tanks — Registered and In Process."

Sewage tank manufacturers can submit their 'Application for Sewage Tank Listing' (see below under 'Forms for Sewage Tanks'), along with required information, to be placed on the 'List of Registered SSTS Sewage Tanks' if the requirements for tank registration are met.

  • PDF Document SSTS Installer Letter, March 6, 2012 (wq-wwists2-45)   This letter was sent to licensed SSTS installers and local units of government. It contains some rule deadlines on SSTS product use (including sewage tanks), new license requirements and local ordinance update timeframe.

Listing of SSTS sewage tanks

  • MS Excel Document List of Registered SSTS Sewage Tanks (PDF Version) (wq-wwists1-25) — This is the list of registered sewage tanks for subsurface sewage treatment systems (SSTS). The Excel spreadsheet contains a tab for each sewage tank manufacturer (make sure the spreadsheet is ‘maximized’ to view tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet).
  • PDF Document At A Glance Listing Of Sewage Tanks (wq-wwists1-25a) — This is the list of registered sewage tanks for subsurface sewage treatment systems (SSTS); it is meant to be used as a quick reference guide. The list also contains sewage tanks in the process of becoming registered for use in Minnesota. "In Process" means the sewage tank manufacturer has submitted initial tank drawings to the MPCA and these tanks can be used in the construction of new and replacement SSTSs through December 31, 2012.
