Citizen Stream Monitoring Program Introduces Secchi Tube
The equipment used to monitor stream transparency in Minnesota will change in 2012. MPCA is replacing all transparency tubes used in the Citizen Stream Monitoring Program (CSMP) with 100 cm Secchi tubes. The main reasons for this change are:
- Using one standard-sized, 100 cm Secchi tube will increase the accuracy and credibility of stream transparency data collected. Right now, volunteers who use 60 cm transparency tubes on clear running streams report many transparency readings as "> 60 cm." Volunteers who use the 100 cm transparency tube report "<20 cm" readings because the release valve prohibits accurate readings below this mark. More exact readings can be captured with 100 cm Secchi tubes.
- Using one standard tube will make the CSMP more efficient. One standard tube will simplify data collection for volunteers, while streamlining program training materials, data management and reporting.
