Stormwater Program for Industrial Activity

Industrial stormwaterThe Industrial Stormwater Program's goal is to reduce the amount of pollution that enters surface and ground water from industrial facilities in the form of stormwater runoff. This goal is accomplished by requiring permitted facilities to:

  • Develop an effective Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) which contains your Stormwater Control Measures, described as Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  • Manage stormwater runoff by meeting the permit requirements or certify condition of No Exposure. The Industrial Stormwater Program received approval to issue the Industrial Stormwater Multi-Sector General Permit. The Permit became effective on April 5, 2010.
  • Download and comply with the PDF Document Industrial Stormwater Multi-Sector General Permit (wq-strm3-08) (4/10)

Monitoring/Sampling Workshops:

More U of M Monitoring Training Workshops are in the works. If your company/organization would like training or can offer space to host future trainings, please contact the Erosion and Stormwater Management Certification Program.

University of Minnesota Industrial Stormwater Sampling and Monitoring Training Opportunities:

• June 21, 2012 (tentative): U of M training on "Industrial Stormwater Response to Benchmark Exceedance" workshop held at the Chanhassen Rec Center. Registration will begin at 10:00 a.m., and the class will conclude at 2:30 p.m. The registration fee is $75. For more information or to register, download the PDF file registration form.

Sand, Gravel and Concrete Activity owners:

If your facility mines construction sand and gravel; quarries limestone, granite or dimension stone; operates hot mix asphalt production areas and/or has concrete manufacturing/recycling activities, please visit the Nonmetallic Mining and Associated Activities webpage to see if this permit is the right fit for you.  The permit allows facilities to gain stormwater and wastewater coverage for multiple sites and activities under one permit.
