Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs
TMDL Project: Lake Magda TMDL — Excess Nutrients

Background

Photo of Lake MagdaLake Magda is a shallow lake located in the City of Brooklyn, MN. The 62-acre drainage area to the lake is fully developed urban and suburban land. Lake Magda outlets into wetland on the west side of TH 169, then through storm sewer to Eagle Creek which discharges into Shingle Creek and ultimately the Mississippi River. The State placed Lake Magda on the 2002 impaired waters list for exceeding the nutrient water quality standard. Excess nutrients such as phosphorus from stormwater runoff create poor water quality conditions causing frequent summer algal blooms which limit recreational activities.

The goal of the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Report is to quantify the pollutant reductions needed for Lake Magda to meet state water quality standards. The MPCA is partnering with the Shingle Creek Watershed Management Commission and their consultant, Wenck Associates, Inc. to complete the Lake Magda TMDL Report and Implementation Plan.

Map and location

Lake Magda is in the city of Brooklyn Park in the northwestern Twin Cities metro area. It lies in the Shingle Creek watershed of the Mississippi River - Twin Cities watershed in the Upper Mississippi River Basin.

TMDL report and implementation plan

The Lake Magda Nutrient TMDL Report is currently under development and will likely be under public notice during 2009.  The Implementation Plan for Lake Magda is also currently under development.
