Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs

TMDL Project: Sunrise Watershed — Multiple Impairments

Background

The Sunrise River Watershed, located in the St. Croix Basin, spans throughout the counties of Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, and Washington.  The Sunrise watershed consists of the West Branch of the Sunrise River, North Branch of the Sunrise River, and the Sunrise River itself.  The watershed is approximately 381 square miles in extent, and includes 33 cities and townships.

The Sunrise watershed has 12 lakes and 10 streams with one or more impairments related to eutrophication (lakes), low dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, and fish and macro-invertebrate impairments.  Since there are numerous impairments throughout the watershed, a work plan was assembled that identifies all the impairments and details the necessary strategies to address them.  Due to the larger size of the watershed and because impairments are not centralized, several projects have already started moving forward to completing a TMDL

Map and Location

The Sunrise watershed is located north of the Twin Cities area, within the St. Croix River Basin.
