Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs

Project: Red River Basin - Turbidity Impairment

Background

This is a multi-year project addressing the development of TMDLs for 25 turbidity impaired reaches within the Red River Basin of the North using a watershed based approach. The project commenced in 2005 and completion of the individual sub-watershed TMDLs is anticipated in 2009.  Water quality and flow monitoring stations have been established on all reaches and approximately three years of data has been collected. The Otter River Turbidity TMDL and the Implementation Plan were approved in 2007. To date, draft TMDL reports have been prepared for 16 impaired reaches. An additional draft report, including 8 turbidity impairments is in development.

The MPCA Detroit Lakes office is coordinating this effort with the Red River Water Management Board. Stakeholders providing guidance and input into the TMDL development process include the Red Basin Water Quality Team, representatives from counties, cities, watershed districts, soil and waters conservations districts, local water planning advisory committees, and special interest groups.
