Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs
Project: Mustinka River - Turbidity
Background
The Mustinka River is located in the Mustinka River Watershed (825 square miles) within the Red River Basin of the North. In 2004 the MPCA listed two reaches of the Mustinka River as being impaired for excessive turbidity. One is a reach 4.7 miles in length that runs from the Grant/Traverse County line to Five Mile Creek. The second is an 8.28 mile reach running from a location just north or of the city of Wheaton to Lake Traverse. One is a reach 4.7 miles in length that runs from the Grant/Traverse County line to Five Mile Creek. The second is an 8.28 mile reach running from a location just north of the City of Wheaton to Lake Traverse. Both impaired reaches are located in Traverse County. The watershed is extensively drained and most of the river in Traverse has been straightened. The land use of the watershed is predominantly agricultural in nature (74% in 2006) with soybeans and corn being the major crop types. The watershed has expressed a population decline since the early 1990s
The TMDL study was initiated in 2007 with a cooperative relationship between the Bois de Sioux Watershed District and the Detroit Lakes Regional Office of the MPCA. The TMDL will be based on Load Duration Curve and Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) modeling.
