Minnesota's Impaired Waters and TMDLs

TMDL Project: Chippewa River - Fecal Coliform

Background

Nine reaches within the Chippewa River watershed have been listed as impaired for not meeting the aquatic beneficial use due to excess fecal coliform bacteria.  An additional reach was found to also be impaired and included in this report, but at the time of writing the report, was not listed.  The TMDL report was completed by the MPCA with help from the Chippewa River Watershed Project.  It was submitted to EPA and approved on January 11, 2007.  The Chippewa River Watershed Project has taken over the duties for the implementation portion of this project.

Map and location

The Chippewa River is located in the Chippewa River watershed of the Minnesota River basin, originating in northeast Douglas County and flowing about 130 miles southwest to Montevideo, where it enters the Minnesota River. The watershed contains parts of Otter Tail, Douglas, Grant, Stevens, Pope, Swift, Kandiyohi, and Chippewa Counties.
