Hazardous Waste Licensing

Businesses, organizations and governmental units that generate hazardous waste are required to report that waste annually and obtain a license that is valid for one year. In addition, they must:

  • make a copy of the completed application form and retain it in their records for three (3) years; and
  • post their license at their place of business.

Who is licensed by the MPCA?

Any non-metro generator who reports more than 10 gallons (or 100 pounds) of waste that was generated the previous year and who pays their fee on time receives an annual license by the MPCA. Metro generators should contact their county office below.

New Hazardous Waste Fee Formula. Beginning in 2007, there is a new fee formula that determines what fees are paid by generators. For waste generated in calendar year 2006, VSQG’s pay $413 and SQG’s and LQG’s pay the $413 base fee plus a per pound rate of 7.6 cents. The fee invoices will be mailed June 13, 2007. VSQG’s have 35 days to pay their fee and SQG’s and LQG’s have 50 days to pay their fee. Your generator size and actual due date are printed on your invoice.

The MPCA will mail out licenses in weekly batches. Note: If you pay your fee on time, you are not in violation of not having a current license, even if you do not receive a license by July 1, 2007. If you do not have your license, verify that your company has paid the fee and keep your existing license posted until the new license is received. A Hazardous Waste Generator License Application is one of many reporting tools used by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to evaluate hazardous waste compliance. Hazardous Waste generators must submit an annual license application itemizing the hazardous waste generated the previous year. The hazardous waste fees are directly related to the amount of waste a company generates. This electronic database displays data submitted to the MPCA by individual generators.
