Exam for Class A and B operators of underground storage tanks

Class A and B operators of underground storage tanks now need to take and pass an exam to ensure knowledge of safe operating and maintenance procedures. The MPCA strongly encourages training prior to taking the exam.

Taking the exam

Read all instructions on the exam closely.  You are only allowed one attempt to take the exam.  You may start and stop taking the test over a 10-day period.  If you fail to complete the exam within this timeframe it is a failure of the exam. If the operator fails the exam or if the facility that the operator is responsible for is found to be significantly out of compliance, the operator is required to attend an MPCA-approved training course. To register to take the exam, each operator will need the following pieces of information:

• E-mail address — the operator will receive their certificate via e-mail after passing the exam.  If you do not have an e-mail address, please visit your preferred search engine web page (such as, www.google.com or www.yahoo.com) to set one up.  **You will need to remember this e-mail information and have access to it in order to receive your certificate.  You are required to retain your certificate to be in compliance with the rules — the MPCA will not have a copy of the certificate.  If you have problems please contact Jenalee Boese by email at jenalee.boese@state.mn.us, or by phone at 651-757-2238 or toll-free at 1-800-657-3864.
• Tank site information — including tank and piping construction material, cathodic protection method, and tank and piping release detection methods.
