Manufacturer recycling programs

Manufacturer recycling programs

Several major manufacturers of computers and electronics are offering consumers recycling and reuse alternatives for their products. This is most common for old PCs and computer peripherals (monitors, keyboards, mice, etc.). These programs must register in Minnesota as collectors of "covered electronic devices."

Many of these branded-product programs are free for consumer products, but be sure you "read the fine print" and confirm that your equipment is accepted. Often the cost of shipping a product or driving a long distance for "free recycling" is more expensive than recycling it locally.

• Amazon
  Amazon has a free mailback recycling program for Kindle and Kindle batteries (includes shipping).
• Apple
  Apple-branded products that are no longer useable can be recycled responsibly at no cost to you. Their recycler will also accept other brands for free, including shipping.
• Canon
  Canon's recycling program for branded consumer products is not free. Consumers pay a fee for recycling and shipping.
• Compaq
  Hewlett Packard (HP) has partnered with Staples stores to offer free recycling for many consumer electronics (all brands); or drop off and free shipping and recycling for HP brands of consumer products at FedEx Office locations.
• Dell
  Dell offers free recycling for all Dell-branded products, including free at-home pick-up service. Also collects non-Dell-branded electronics with the purchase of a similar Dell system.
• Durabrand
  Walmart house brands (Durabrand and Ilo) can be recycled at no charge at Samsung Recycling Direct locations in the U.S.
• Dynex
  Free recycling for Best Buy private label products (Insignia, Dynex, VPR Matrix).
• Epson
  Free recycling by mail for any EPSON brand of computer equipment or peripherals: printers, scanners, digital cameras, laptops, computers and projectors. Follow the online instructions to receive a pre-paid shipping label, pack up your item, and take to a FedEx-designated drop-off location.
• Goldstar
  LG offers free recycling drop-off for LG, Goldstar, and Zenith consumer electronics and accessories. In Minnesota, these are Waste Management facilities.
• HP
  Hewlett Packard (HP) has partnered with Staples stores to offer free recycling for many consumer electronics (all brands); or drop off and free shipping and recycling for HP consumer products at FedEx Office locations.
• IBM
  Free recycling (shipping included) for select IBM branded products; contact environment@lenovo.com prior to accessing the recycling service to ensure eligibility.
• Ilo
  Walmart house brands (Durabrand and Ilo) can be recycled at no charge at Samsung Recycling Direct locations in the U.S.
• Insignia
  Free recycling for Best Buy private label products (Insignia, Dynex, VPR Matrix).
• Iomega
  Free recycling (shipping included) for Iomega branded network attached storage devices.
• Kodak
  All MRM sites accept Kodak digital picture frames at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Lenovo
  Free recycling (shipping included) for all Lenovo branded products, including system units, monitors, keyboards, and mice.
• Lexmark
  Lexmark-branded products can be shipped to the manufacturer for free recycling, but you pay for shipping (which typically exceeds the cost of local recycling).
• LG
  LG offers free recycling drop-off for LG, Goldstar, and Zenith consumer electronics and accessories. In Minnesota, these are Waste Management facilities.
• Medion
  Free recycling (shipping included) for all Medion branded products, including system units, monitors, keyboards, and mice.
• Mitsubishi
  All MRM sites accept Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVD players at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Panasonic
  All MRM sites accept Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVD players at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Samsung
  Samsung consumer electronic products and IT products can be brought in for free recycling at established drop-off locations in all 50 states, including Minnesota.
• Sharp
  All MRM sites accept Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVD players at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Sony
  Sony's take back Recycling Program offers free recycling of Sony products and packaging at designated dropoff sites. Trade-in program for select working Sony products.
• Toshiba
  All MRM sites accept Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVD players at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Vizio
  All MRM sites accept Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and VIZIO brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVD players at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.
• Zenith
  LG offers free recycling drop-off for LG, Goldstar, and Zenith consumer electronics and accessories. In Minnesota, these are Waste Management facilities.
