Governor's Awards: Frequently asked questions

What is a Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention?
The Governor's Awards program honors superior environmental achievement by Minnesota's businesses, nonprofits, governmental agencies, and other institutions. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency seeks organizations that focus on preserving our environment through innovative pollution and waste prevention, resource efficiency, and sustainable practices. Winning a Governor's Award represents the highest level of environmental achievement for these organizations.

Who can apply for the Governor's Award?
Any nonprofit, business, governmental agency, institution that exemplifies environmental leadership by reducing or eliminating wastes and pollutants at the source is encouraged to apply.

We are not a manufacturer, can we still apply?
Yes! In fact, a variety of P2 projects and programs from various organizations are encouraged to apply. Possible projects include greening supply chains, industrial pollution prevention, green building, low-impact development, watershed restoration, renewable energy, green chemistry and design of products or components, or some other project that reduces waste and toxicity at the source.

What if I'm not sure of how to measure the results of my project or program?
MPCA staff is available to help with quantifying project results. For assistance, call Peder Sandhei (651-757-2688) or e-mail govawards.pca@state.mn.us.

When and where will the awards ceremony take place?
Winners of the 2010-2011 award will be recognized August 25 (1 p,.m.) at the Eco Experience exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair.

Can I see examples of winning projects from previous years?
Past winners are featured on MPCA's web site. Eligible projects are determined each year in the call for entries.
