The Sustainability Stage is the Eco Experience’s location for environmental demonstrations, entertainment, and presentations. During our six daily performances you can rest your legs, learn a lot, and enjoy a little eco-entertainment.

Thursday, August 23 - Go green to save green $

9:30 a.m. Show Me The Money: 10 Simple Sustainability Steps presented by Terry Gips, Alliance for Sustainability
This fun, informative and play-filled presentation will show how you can save $9,343 a year from one lifestyle change and easily save $1,000 with a 100-fold return on your investment from a simple purchase. We'll answer your questions and show you how you can Go Green and Save Green.

11 a.m. Steps to a Better Tomorrow Building and Energy Efficiency presented by Ryan Ross, The Great North Team
Our entire project centers around Building and Energy efficiency. We will be talking about how it can influence society on a global, national, and local scale. We will focus on specific aspects of our conundrum. Some highlights of our presentation will be us analyzing solutions such as building designs, and basic improvements that could be made around the world. At the end of our presentation we will be handing out brochures on our topic.

1 p.m. Home Energy Audits: Gateway to Energy and Money Savings presented by Amber Viehauser, CenterPoint Energy  
CenterPoint Energy's independent, certified energy auditor will discuss the benefits of a home energy audit, the various tools used, expected reports  and examples of low cost, quick-fix and long term recommendations for home improvements that will get the most energy and money savings for the investment.

Minnesota GreenCorps is a statewide AmeriCorps program in which members commit to a year of service with a selected host site organization. Members work on issues related to energy conservation, green infrastructure, living green outreach, or waste/recycling. Hear from current and former members about their experience as MN GreenCorps members, and about larger opportunities to volunteer for the environment.

11 a.m. Our organic Garden presented by Kent Linder, Open Arms Open Arms of Minnesota
Learn about the work of Open Arms of Minnesota and our organic garden, called Open Farms. Open Arms delivers meals to people with illness in the Metro area, and we are a volunteer-powered organization. Our Farm Director, Ben Penner, will share information about organic farming, and about our project specifically.

1 p.m. Minnesota Retiree Environmental Technical Assistance Program (RETAP) presented by Rick Person, RETAP
Since RETAPs inception in 2001, over 200 Minnesota businesses and institutions have benefited from RETAP facility assessments. Each assessment yields a written report tailored for the client identifying high priority recommendations and estimated financial and environmental savings. Average savings from implementation of RETAP recommendations is over $11,000 per year per client.

2:30 p.m. Monitor the Health of Your Lake or Stream presented by Laurie Sovell and Courtney Ahlers-Nelson, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Citizen Monitoring Program
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agencys (MPCA) Citizen Monitoring Programs combine citizen involvement with MPCA expertise. This presentation will provide background on the Citizen Lake and Stream Monitoring Programs, describe volunteer data use, demonstrate the Citizen Monitoring Report tool, and have an audience member measure stream transparency with a Secchi tube.

4:30 p.m. Minnesota GreenCorps presented by Simon Helgeson and Renee Van Siclen, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

From the bottoms of drawers and backs of our closets lurk shirts begging to be remade into clothing and accessories that will again be proudly worn.  Cut Loose Creations transforms gently used shirts into new fashions and invites you to come see how old shirts get a whole new life.

11 a.m. Arc’s Value Village Recycled Fashion presented by Dolo Egger, The Arc Greater Twin Cities  
Arc's Value Village Thrift Stores sales provide more than 40 percent of The Arc Greater Twin Cities' funding. The Arc provides programs and services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families. For more than 65 years The Arc has been helping people create more possibilities in their lives.

1 p.m. Skylark dry cleaning presented by Michael Guest
This interactive talk will begin with a brief overview of the history of dry cleaning and the industry’s evolution. Learn more about the current state of dry cleaning and environmental efforts underway to reduce harmful chemicals. This talk will help Minnesota fairgoers become better educated consumers, including what questions to ask their local dry cleaner to ensure toxic-free cleaning. Plus there will be fun facts and prizes on a stick!

2:30 p.m. Energy Saving Ideas For New and Existing Home and Kitchen Appliances presented by Warners’ Stellian Appliances
A representative of Warners' Stellian will explain the benefits of energy- and water-saving appliances, including Energy Star refrigerators, washers, freezers and dishwashers but also ways to save energy while cooking on a stove, microwave or cooktop (not rated by Energy Star) or while using a clothes dryer.

4:30 p.m. Solar Options and Economics-How to Assess a Building for Solar presented by Todd Fink
Is solar a wise move? This depends on your enegy use, how much you pay for it, what your roof and property look like and other site traits. Learn solar siting and econmics in this session.

WaterSense, a partnership program by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, seeks to protect the future of our nation's water supply by offering people a simple way to use less water with water-efficient products, new homes, and services.

11 a.m. SEWERMAN! presented by David Legvold, Minnesota Waters
SEWERMAN  takes you into the disgusting world of what goes into our storm and sanitary sewers. Using water to get rid of what we do not want anymore requires that we clean it up too. "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll plug your nose, you'll hurl" is SEWERMAN'S motto. In addition the audience will meet the Superhero of Sanitary Sewer Science: Thomas Crapper.

Tim will talk about simple (and not as simple) things you can do inside and outside your home to conserve water.  Join us to find out how to stop that drip, drip, drip.

2:30 p.m. H20 for life: What can you do to change the world? presented by Patty Hall, H20 for Life
H2O for Life- raising awareness of the global water crisis through local and global action.  Students will learn how to make a difference in the world. H2O for Life schools focus on meaningful local concerns, and help fund safe water and sanitation for children around the world. Campaign phrases that could be used:  Tap into Tap water; Put a Drop in the Bucket; Walk for Water

9:30 a.m. Contaminants of Emerging Concern presented by Michele Ross, Minnesota Department of Health
Learn about the Minnesota Department of Health’s program that evaluates contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and learn how to reduce your exposure to these chemicals and environmental impact from activities in and around the home.

11 a.m. Sustainable Stormwater Management presented by Jon Schoetke, County Materials
Permeable paver systems filter storm water and minimize pollutants from reaching lakes, rivers and streams. Join Jon Schroetke from County Materials on the Sustainability Stage to learn how permeable paver patios, driveways and sidewalks can increase natural site filtration, comply with shoreline regulations, and offer environmentally-friendly landscaping solutions.

1 p.m. Permeable Pavers for Stormwater Management presented by Tim Oberg, MNLA
Stormwater management is important to our eco-system. Permeable paver systems are a best management practice that can help keep our lakes and stream clean and free from pollution.

2:30 p.m. Minnesota Drinking Water Taste Test presented by Stew Thornley, Minnesota Department of Health
Tap water is great in Minnesota. Come and watch as the state's best-tasting water is selected by a panel of judges. The program will include information on tap water in Minnesota, how it's treated, what's done to ensure its safety, how it compares to bottled water, and the audience will have the chance to ask questions and interact with members of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Section of American Water Works Association.

4:30 p.m. The Magnificent Macroinvertebrates presented by Kim Laing, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Aquatic macroinvertebrates are tiny creatures that have no backbone and are visible to the naked eye. Come find out more about where they live and what they eat. Let us share how macroinvertebrates help us identify healthy water, and how the they are doing in the Credit River.

6 p.m. Clearwater Band: Music with an Environmental Theme
Clearwater is an acoustic trio that performs folk, bluegrass and a mix of easy listening songs. With an interest in protecting our environment, Clearwater performs many songs with environmental themes, including a few original songs. Come and sing along with Clearwater.

Wednesday, August 29 - Burn wise to protect your home health, and the air we breathe

9:30 a.m. Asthma and Air Quality presented by Wendy Brunner, Minnesota Department of Health and Cassie McMahon, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Learn about how air pollution impacts asthma, a common lung disease that can be diagnosed at any age. Air pollution can trigger asthma episodes that make breathing difficult.  Find out what you can do to reduce pollution and health effects on bad air days.

11 a.m. Burn Barrels presented by Henry Fisher, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Learn what the big fuss is about with burning your garbage today. Get the latest facts on the impacts garbage burning has on your health and our environment.  Also learn about the creative steps some rural Minnesota counties are taking to provide convenient but affordable waste disposal while reducing the number of households who burn their waste.

1 p.m. Fireplace maintenance presented by Gary  Wilkening, Wilkening Fireplace Co.
Proper maintenance of your fireplace and using dry wood makes a huge difference in the amount of particles and smoke your fireplace produces.  Find out how to keep your fireplace in tip top shape.

As fossil fuels have increased in price, many have turned to burning wood logs and pellets for home heating. This presentation will focus on the air pollutants generated when wood is burned, review upcoming regulations, and conclude with recommendations for those thinking of using wood as a fuel.

6 p.m. Status of the Emerald Ash Borer In Minnesota presented by Mark Abrahamson, Minnesota Department of Agriculture
First discovered in Minnesota in 2009, the emerald ash borer is a non-native invasive insect that threatens to destroy all of Minnesota's 1 billion ash trees. MN Dept of Ag entomologist Mark Abrahamson discusses the history of EAB, how to identify infested trees, and what to do if your tree is infested.

Thursday, August 30 - The dirt on compost

9:30 a.m. Biodiesel: Minnesota’s Home Grown Energy presented by Hoon Ge, MN Soybean
Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning alternative to petroleum diesel made from a wide variety of renewable sources including vegetable oils and animal fats.  In Minnesota, it is most commonly made from soybean oil. Use of biodiesel reduces our dependence on foreign oil, supports the local economy and improves air quaility.

This presentation will cover rain gardens for homeowners as a way to protect water quality and reduce run-off.  The presentation will demonstrate how easy the rain garden is to create, place, or locate within the yard.

2:30 p.m. Superior Dream: Kayaking Around the World’s Largest Lake, Lake Superior presented by Greg Petry, Lake Superior Superior Dream
Lucas Will and Greg Petry finished their 1,200 mile sea kayak circumnavigation of Lake Superior on October 3, 2010 after 97 days of paddling. Big waves, sinking boats, the Ontario Provincial Police and one lost puppy.
