Installation of Septic System

Your underground septic system (also called a 'subsurface sewage treatment system,' or SSTS) needs to be properly designed, installed and maintained to protect swimmers, drinking wells, and the quality of nearby waterbodies. Learn how to hire a septic-system professional, schedule required inspections, and find important information about maintenance and system abandonment.

Since local ordinances can vary from the state code, always check with your local government (township, city or county) to determine the requirements in your area.

The University of Minnesota has excellent resources for homeowner questions relating to SSTS. We refer you to your local unit of government or Valeria Prax, Mora; Doug Malchow, Rochester; and Laurie Brown, Cloquet; or the University of Minnesota Extension Service, 1-800-657-3516.
