Buying Green

Buying green

When we think of "reducing our carbon footprint," we think about driving less and improving the efficiency of our home. Just as important, however, is being intentional about what we buy.

Choose ENERGY STAR qualified products

Looking to replace your refrigerator, stove, or other appliance? You can save money and reduce your impact on the environment by buying ENERGY STAR appliances.

Buy, maintain, and repair durable products

Durable products last a long time. Buying a durable shoe, for example, will reduce the total number of shoes you need to buy each year, reduce your household waste, and save you money in the long run.

Buy products made out of recycled materials

"Buying recycled" supports markets for the materials you recycle locally. Recycled products are quality items, but they aren't made with as much "new stuff."

Reduce packaging

In 2008, each person in the U.S. created 4.5 pounds of household solid waste each day. Containers and packaging made up 31% of that waste. Minnesotans recycle some of that waste (we recycle around 40% of what can be recycled), and we should all continue to recycle when we can.

Buy green power

Green power is electricity generated from renewable, high-efficiency, or low-pollution energy sources, such as wind or solar energy. It's clean, it's simple to sign up, and it's now available to all Minnesotans!
