Spatial data
Spatial data consist of coordinates (geographic or projected) that represent the physical location of a site or a site feature along with metadata that describe how and by whom those coordinates were collected.
MPCA offers data and shapefiles for many of our data-based applications. The shapefile download includes both data and files that require geographic information system (GIS) software to make maps or perform other geography-based functions.
Questions about these data sets? Contact MPCA's Data Desk at 651-296-6300 or 1-800-657-3864 toll free.

303(d) Impaired waters - Lakes (2010)Lakes shapefile which represents the current Inventory of Impaired Waters (per Section 303(d) Clean Water Act). These files were created for those interested in preparing computerized maps of impaired waters. To use these files you will need Geographic Information System (GIS) computer software. The zipped files contain a separate shapefile for lakes, streams and wetlands, including metadata. The projection for these shapefiles is UTM extended zone 15, NAD83. These shapefiles were created by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency using the 1:24,000 scale National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). -

MPCA Water Quality Monitoring Stations
Geographic data from the map-based search tool is available for download in a shapefile format, suitable for use with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. MPCA Water Quality Monitoring Stations (file size = 2.5 MB) -
TMDL/WRAPS project boundaries
This zipped shapefile contains polygons representing the boundaries of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy (WRAPS) projects that have been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This data is intended to be used in water resource management and impaired waters activities. The project polygons were compiled by the MPCA with input from external partners, and the data layer is updated when new TMDL/WRAPS are approved by EPA. The projection for this data layer is UTM Zone 15 North, NAD 1983. -
What's in my Neighborhood (WIMN)
This data set includes site names and addresses for all of the points on our map, along with links to the site pages where you can find detailed information. The shapefile download includes files which work together to display information on a map. You need Geographic Information System (GIS) software in order to use the shapefile to make maps or perform other geographic-based functions. However, if you just want to look at the data in a table, save the file called wimn_sites_mpca.dbf from the shapefile download, and open it with any standard spreadsheet program. The file called wimn_sites_mpca.html describes the data in that table.
