MPCA invites comments on proposed expansion of Becker Ash Landfill

Contact: Stephen Mikkelson, 218-316-3887

Brainerd, Minn. ― The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) invites comments on an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for Great River Energy’s proposed expansion of its Becker Ash Landfill in Becker, Minn.

An EAW is a preliminary environmental review of how a proposed project could potentially affect the environment. Interested persons are invited to submit written comments on this EAW until 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2012.

Great River Energy is proposing this expansion to provide needed disposal capacity for refuse-derived fuel ash generated at the company’s Elk River Energy Recovery Station power plant. The existing landfill is expected to reach its permitted capacity in early 2015. The expansion would increase the landfill’s storage capacity from 1.7 million cubic yards to 6.3 million cubic yards, providing an additional 50-70 years of site life.

Comments on the Becker Ash Landfill EAW should be submitted in writing by 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, 2012, to William Lynott, MPCA, 520 Lafayette Rd. N., Saint Paul, MN 55155-4194, by email to William.Lynott@state.mn.us or by fax to 651-297-2343.

The MPCA will use the comments it receives on the EAW to evaluate the potential for significant environmental effects from the project and determine whether an Environmental Impact Statement (a more comprehensive environmental review) is needed. The EAW is available for review on the MPCA’s Environmental Assessment Worksheets webpage. Or, you can request a copy by calling Mary Osborn at 651-757-2101.
