Duluth, Minn. ― The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) invites the public to an open house and information meeting regarding U.S. Steel Keetac’s proposed air permit modifications related to a facility expansion.
The meeting is scheduled for June 16, 2011, at the Hibbing Memorial Building in Hibbing, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. MPCA staff will be available during the 6 – 6:30 open house session. At 6:30, an MPCA engineer will present an overview of the air permit process and Keetac’s proposed draft permit. A question-and-answer session will follow.
Formal public comments will be taken at this meeting. The public comment period began June 2 and will end at 4:30 p.m. July 1, 2011.
Keetac’s proposed air permit modification amends an existing permit to allow for modifications and a re-activation of an idled taconite furnace. These changes would accommodate increased taconite production, including expansions in mining operations and support processes related to the production increase.
