St. Paul, Minn. — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking comments on an Environmental Assessment Worksheet (EAW) for Northern Metals, LLC. The Minneapolis company, which recycles metal scrap, has proposed changing its 1998 Air Emission Permit to eliminate obsolete requirements and feedlot restrictions, to reflect the facility’s actual emission rates and to include new pollution-control equipment which has been added. The proposal includes no new construction, but it does involve major changes to the current Air Emission Permit.
An EAW is a preliminary assessment of how a proposal might affect the environment. The MPCA will use comments on this EAW to evaluate the potential for significant environmental effects from permit change and to determine whether a more comprehensive environmental review is needed.
Comments on the EAW will be accepted through Dec. 14. The document is available for review at the MPCA office in St. Paul, and posted online at /oxpg691. Questions or formal comments should be directed to William Lynott, MPCA, 520 Lafayette Road N., Saint Paul, MN 55155, or sent by email to William.Lynott@state.mn.us.
Any person may comment on the EAW. All comments should include references to specific sections, and specific reasons supporting your position. They must be submitted to the MPCA in writing by 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 14.
The draft amendment to the Northern Metals Air Emission Permit is being placed on public notice concurrently with the EAW. Inquiries regarding the permit itself should be directed to Kelsey Suddard, MPCA Air Permit Engineer, at 651-757-2767.
